Unity 8 och Mir är alternativ till Unity 7 och X i 15.04 liksom i 14.10. Möjligen blir de nya alternativen standard i 15.10.

En intressant nyhet som kommer till Ubuntu med Unity 8 är det nya installationspaketetsformatet Click.

Mir har nu nått en ny milsten: 0.9.0.

Vanliga konfigurationsfiler för att t ex sätta eller ändra miljövariabler är:

• ~/.profile
• /etc/profile.d/*.sh

Om man råkar göra fel när man redigerar sådana filer, och felet innebär fel sh-syntax, misslyckas inloggningen och man studsar tillbaka till inloggningsskärmen utan förklaring. Om felet inte är syntaktiskt, ignoreras det bara. Felen loggas i ~/.xsession-errors.

Genom en fix av bugg #678421 blir man i fortsättningen varnad genom en dialogruta som poppar upp, och syntaxfel avbryter inte inloggningen utan behandlas som andra fel. En komponent i lösningen är att köra konfigurationsfilerna under /bin/bash i stället för /bin/sh. Det innebär att det i fortsättningen blir möjligt att använda Bash-specifik kod i sådana konfigurationsfiler.

Ubuntu 14.04 och 14.10 kommer att uppdateras med den här ändringen.

Linux 3.18.0-8.9 (proposed), baserad på Linux 3.18.1.

Status: Vivid Development Kernel
Both the master and master-next branches of our Vivid kernel have been rebased to the v3.18.1 upstream stable kernel. We have also uploaded our first 3.18 based kernel to the archive (3.18.0-8.9). Please test and let us know your results. We are also starting to track the v3.19 kernel on our unstable branch.
