Efter installation av nVidias proprietära drivrutiner 177 någonting i System->Administration->Hårdvarusdrivrutiner så ser xorg.conf ut så här istället. Ubuntu klagar inte lägre i uppstarten, men upplösningen är fortfarande 640x480 och går inte att sätta högre varken i Skärmupplösning eller i nvidia-settings.

Efter många turer fram och tillbaka på Ubuntus irc-kanal så verkar det som om det inte är grafikkortet eller drivrutinerna som spökar utan snarare så att Ubuntu inte hittar skärmen. När jag går in på Skärmupplösning i menyn så står det tex Okänd. Jag har en Acer AL2216W bildskärm. Hur får man Ubuntu 8.10 att hitta en sådan skärm?

Jag tackar för hjälpen. Alla som har varit här inne och svarat sedan min förra postning. Jag har legat och sovit eftersom jag spenderade hela natten med att försöka få upplösningen att fungera i Ubuntu 8.10. Jag fick aldrig ordning på problemet, men stängd eav datorn och skärmen, samt drog ur strömkabeln till bildskärmen när jag gick och la mig. Till min stora förvåning fungerade upplösningen perfekt när jag startade datorn för första gången idag. Vet ej varför, men jag misstänker att det har med att jag dragit ur sladden till bildskärmen att göra. Jag testade redan igår att stänga av och starta om datorn/bildskärmen och jag vet inte allt. Det enda jag inte testade var att dra ut sladden till skärmen. Nu fungerar upplösningen iaf. Troligen var det inget fel på drivrutinen till mitt grafikkort. Ubuntu hade rätt, emn det verkar som om Ubuntu inte detekterade min bildskärm korrekt. Varför vet jag inte, men nu fungerar det iaf (än så länge ska jag väl för säkerhets skull säga). Det som är så konstigt är att när jag försökte boota från Ubuntu 8.04 Live-skivan istället för 8.10 Live-skivan eller från 8.10 installationen på hårddisken så klagade Ubuntu 8.04 Live-skivan också på grafiken och vägrade att starta, inte ens i low graphics mode fungerade Ubuntu 8.04 Live-skivan. Det har den alltid gjort förut, skumt! Nu fungerar iaf upplsöningen och jag vågar inte testa att boota från 8.04 eller 8.10 Live-skivan ifall det skulle hända någonting med skärmen. det hade varit intressant att veta vad som gick fel och varför det helt plötsligt började fungera igen. Det enda man kan anklaga Ubuntu för är möjligen att Ubuntu inte verkade detektera bildskärmen, men om det beror på skärmen eller Ubuntu egentligen vet jag inte.
