Is there a way to remove the ubuntu user from the usb flash drive ubuntu? Recently I created a boot-able usb flash drive ubuntu. Its working fine. The only problem I face is it auto loging with the user ubuntu. I tried change the setting of the login window. Now it stops autologing. But I am unable to remove the ubuntu user, in which anybody can login.

Hello, this is a Swedish forum with most post in Swedish... So I think that you would have a better chance to get a response in http://ubuntuforums.org

I think it depends on how you installed the system. Well how did you create it?

If you just want the ubuntu user not to login automatically, go to Login Screen Settings (System > Admin > Login screen), first click Unlock to gain privileges, then uncheck the option "Log in as <username> automatically".

(EDIT: set password for ubuntu user in a terminal with the command "passwd" while ubuntu user is logged in. It will ask for the old password, which is empty, just press return, and for the new password twice. The following instruction won't work.) You may also want to go to User Settings (System > Admin > Users and Groups) to add a password for the ubuntu user (I think the ubuntu user on a live cd/usb has no password by default). Click Change by its Password field.

If you want to create a new user, go to User Settings (System > Admin > Users and Groups). Click add, enter a user name (like "David") a system name (like "david") and a password (won't tell you). If you want that user to be your normal user with sudo-rights, change Account Type from Desktop User to Administrator.

(EDIT: you can not remove the default ubuntu user using the following instruction.) When you have checked that the new user works as expected, then, if you want, you can remove the ubuntu user from User Settings.

(Note: The live usb thumb system must have been created with an adequate amount of space to change system settings and for your work. If not, it will soon stop working with "disk full" kind of errors.)

(Note: I have not tested these advices on a live usb thumb system. Don't remove the ubuntu user unless you're sure the new user can do everything it could.)

EDIT: Now I have tested with a xubuntu live usb thumb. The ubuntu user seems to be very special, and can not easily be removed. I suggest you keep it, but you can add another user, and set a password on the ubuntu user, so no-one can use it. Corrections added above.
